about

This radiophonic album - released on Gagarin Records in 2005 - marked the debut of an unlike duo that kept on producing ubergreat records and tapes together ever since. Their enthusiasm for sound art led to the founding of Glasgow's radio art festival RADIOPHRENIA. Mark Vernon is a prolific sonic manipulator, while Mr. Burns claims to have a layman's ear. However, Burns is also known to be a huge connoisseur of Vaudeville oddities, and a collector of ventriloquist puppies.

This collection will appeal mainly to the absent-minded coterie. How does a disko club sound from outside? How do you stop a tape at the right position? Have you ever listened to some tramps singing in the park? The answers to these questions can be found in the marvellous music of these two Scottish tape-musicians who are equipped with a fine sense of poetic humour. File under vaudioville, varièté concrete, documentary forgery, unsound art, whorespiel, blunderphonics, (not of this) world music, imaginary soundtreks, unimaginative soundtracks, lower case, lower class, lower quality, lower prices hurry hurry now while stocks last!!!

"What really gives them the edge over so many records of this ilk is that Vernon & Burns have a great sense of humour and fun. (...) Whilst not setting themselves up as 'proper' experimenters along the order of Luc Ferrari or Bernard Parmegiani, this duo can often be more bold or daring than any establishment electro-acoustic musician".
- Ed Pinsent, the Sound Projector (January 2006)

"Always the gentleman, I held the door open for the lady behind me who happened to be a famous opera singer. Unfortunately, it was a revolving door. Here is an aria recorded as she whirled around." - Barry Burns (2005)
